A VPN stands for virtual private network and it is a serviced that allows the user to access the web safely and privately by routing connection through a server and hiding your online actions. A typical VPN works by encrypting the data before the internet service provider or the area Wi-Fi provider gets a chance to see it. The data then goes to the VPN and from the VPN server to the user’s online destination. The destination could be an online bank website or a video sharing website or even a search engine. The online destination sees the data as coming from the VPN server and its location and not from the computer and your location.
How to install NordVPN on Firestick?
NordVPN is among the most popular VPNs in the world, even though the company that makes it does not have an app specifically for Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV stick. FireOS is a fork of Android and because of this it is possible to install NordVPN’s app on a Firestick with a bit of added work.
The first thing that needs to be done when installing is to ensure proper subscription to NordVPN.
Another prerequisite when installing is to have a second generation Firestick or later. Access to the APK file of the VPN app will be needed and can be downloaded directly from NordVPN’s website.
The interface of the NordVPN Android app makes it difficult to control the app and as a default the remote that comes with the Firestick should be used. The following are the basic steps when installing NordVPN on the Firestick:
From the home screen, go to the top and select Settings, then Device. Then go to Developer options, and then toggle both settings i.e. ADB debugging and Apps from unknown sources.
Go to the home screen and select the magnifying glass icon to search for an app called Downloader. Select Get and let the application install and then proceed to open it.
Type in the download URL to the APK file. This can take some time when it is done using the remote. When the download finishes, a prompt message will appear to install the app. Select install, then Open. Once it has installed it will be safe to exit the downloader.
NordVpn is seen as a third party app and because of this, it does not show up on the home page or even the apps page. To find it, go to Settings, then Applications and then Manage installed applications and then select your VPN app from the list, then proceed to click Launch application.
For some users the steps end here and it is possible to sign in and connect right away but for NordVPN and many other VPN apps that is not the case and it is necessary to use a mouse.
How to control NordVPN on Firestick with a Mouse
It is possible to use a Bluetooth mouse and connect it to your Fire TV but another option is to use a smartphone or a tablet to remotely control the Fire TV. When using Amazon, there is a TV remote app for Firesticks that replicates the basic functions of the physical remote rather than giving the user mouse control. The recommended app to use for this is called Remote for Fire TV, and a free version can be found by trying CetusPlay which is available on both iOS and Android. The app will need to be on both the Fire TV Stick and on the Android or tablet. Once the app is installed on the Fire TV, open it and ensure the first item is toggled on, and the second to start the app which is optional. A status indicator should be visible that says Started, but no action is necessary because the app runs in the background. Ensure the Fire TV stick and the second Android devices are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network after which the Fire TV Stick in the phone can be connected. The Mouse option can be selected and the screen of the phone can be used as a touchpad. Now we can open the NordVPN back up and use it from the remote app. For Nord, it is possible to just click the Person icon to get the sign in page and enter the credentials. Then the location can be selected and a connection can be established. When connecting for the first time, a prompt message will appear to allow connection. The connection should remain active until the power is down on the device or once the device has been manually disconnected.
